Restaurants

I know it is not Nicois or even particularly French but does anybody know where to go for a good steak in Nice ?

Hi there,

I like the steak at L%26#39;Hippopotamus Restaurant Grill on Rue Felix Faure by Espace Massena, and its not expensive.

You can get a decent steak and frites at any brasserie - it couldn%26#39;t be more french.

But for maxiumum enjoyment it really depends what cut of meat you are looking for -so what kind of steaks are you interested in ?

Thanks Craig - I%26#39;ll try that one.

I like good quality rump - I think it%26#39;s pave in France - sirloin (faux-filet) and fillet. I suppose like everything else it%26#39;s the quality that%26#39;s important.

I would have said a UK sirloin steak can often be more like entrecĂ´te in french than aloyau or faux-filet - but the french butcher cows a bit differently from the Americans and British so the are only rough comparisons and it can be different butcher to butcher.

As far as restaurants are concerned there are so many its hard to pick them out - few places will do a bad steak

You get a good entrecĂ´te with a hunk of roquefort cheese on top at L%26#39;occitanie, Bd gambetta

Hippopotamus chain as mentioned by Scotsguy is good meat but not necessarily the best atmosphere - we often go there when we have a meat craving for a quick lunch

{Btw scotsguy I though you meant l%26#39;hippocampe at 22 bd Auguste Raynaud which is a popular local brasserie - never tried it though ]

I had a brilliant pave de boeuf rossini [with foie gras ] recently at La Goulette st St Jean cap ferrat by the marina

Completely delicious , fab and amazing - tagliata de boeuf on a bed of roquette at La Voglia rue st francois de paule.
