Advice please - Saint Malo or Cherbourg

Hi, I%26#39;m not an expert on either of these locations, so am looking for advice.

Basically we%26#39;re looking at visiting either for 3 nights over a weekend in January 2010.

Our priorities are good local restaurants, nice genuine French bars and a few old-town tourist attractions.

Can someone recommend which is better?

Many thanks

I have not been to Cherborg so cannot compare the two places, but St-Malo certainly has all the elements your searching for.

We stayed at Dinan recently and made a couple of day trips to St-Malo, La Ville Intra-Muros (within the walls) part of the city is lovely, and you can walk right around the walls and see the sea and bay beyond (if there isn%26#39;t a sea mist that day!)

There were lots of places to eat, but following a guide book we decided to have the €25 menu at Le Chalut (8, rue de la Corne au Cerf, 35400 - SAINT-MALO. Tel: 02 99 56 71 58) which was one of the best dining experiences I%26#39;ve had in France. Beautiful fresh fish and good portions!

You are not far by car from Dinard (about 8km away), Cancale (which is full of fruit du mer restaurants) and about 30 minutes drive from Mont St Michel and Dinan, the medieval hilltop city.

You can also go on the ferry, using Condor ferries, from either Weymouth or Portsmouth:

In general, I would also opt for St Malo for a weeend. My doubt is that if you encounter bad weather in January, it is a much longer crossing. Also January is a time when ferry comanies take vessels out of service for their annual major overhaul. So it might be a good idea to check with Brittany Ferries.

Having been to both Cherbourg and St Malo in the winter I agree with previous posters that St Malo is your best option. There is more variety and it%26#39;s a much more pleasing town. If you%26#39;re taking a car there is also much more of interest near St Malo - you%26#39;d need to travel a fair distance from Cherbourg
