Colline du Chateau

Hi,

Could anyone please let me know whether there is public transportation from Nice Ville train station to Colline du Chateau? I wouldn%26#39;t mind walking but I%26#39;ll only be in Nice for a very short period of time so would like to save myself some traveling time.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Many thanks.

You can take the tram from close to the station, to Place Garibaldi. Once out of the station and on the main road, turn left and walk down hill for a minute until you come to a major road. You should see the tram stop in front of you. Once at Place Garibaldi, find your way to the front of the church on the square. Facing the church, you can either turn left, and keep walking along the same side of the street. You%26#39;ll come to a road leading up to Castle Hill. In the other direction, to the right, you%26#39;ll go past a narrow street leading uphill. This is in the old town. Basically, keep waking uphill and you%26#39;ll get there.

Alternatively, get the tram to the Opera stop. Once out, you should be able to see the sea through the buildings on one side. Walk to the sea and turn left. Keep walking and you%26#39;ll come to either the lift up the hill, or you can walk up the steps.

Montée Eberlé [the walk up from rue catherine segurane left of the church monaco cabbie mentioned] has been shut for a quite a while

You can still continue down catherine segurane to rue foresta and then go up Montée montfort.

However really the question I have is why you want to go to colline de chateau -is it for the views?

how much time do you actually have ?

are you wanting to see anything else in Nice

Thanks very much for your replies! Yes the only reason I%26#39;m going up Colline du Chateau is for the view. I%26#39;ll be arriving in Nice at around 8PM, spending the night there and will then take the train to Avignon at 10:40AM the next morning. It%26#39;s more like a stopover so I don%26#39;t have any other plans for Nice other than going up Colline du Chateau. Alternatively, is there anything else I should see in Nice in such a short period of time? Thanks again!

Its not possible to go up Colline du Chateau at night except during certain special events in july/August - evening concerts with wandering players

A couple of weeks back Nice matin had an article which mentioned that people have been trapped inside parks and on the colline du chateau after the lift has stopped and the gates locked because they haven%26#39;t realised there is no 24/24 access.

In winter the the parks in Nice shut at around 6pm then spring and autumn its 7pm and the eight of summer its 8pm.

so you will have to try and go up in the morning after 8am\-ish when the gates are unlocked

Or take an early bus number number 14 to Mont Boron and see the much better view from there.

Stay on the bus till the last stop then walk to the left [as you face the water fountain] following the road round till you reach chemin de bellevue - take the right hand path [=it goes in a circle] you will see magnificent views over the port of Nice, Colline du chateau and baie des Anges as Mont boron is much higher.

You could also go to Mont Alban and see the views over Villefranche if you are quick

Thanks very much selkieNice!

I%26#39;ll take your advice and consider going to Mont Boron. In case my friend still decides to go to Colline du Chateau, was wondering if I could follow monacoCabbie%26#39;s directions and take the tram to the Opera stop and then walk up the steps from there? I did a quick search online for the route map of the tram and was not able to locate the Opera Stop (I can only find the Garibaldi station). Do you have any idea when the tram starts to operate each day? I will really need to be there by 8AM when it opens if we do end up going there.

Thanks again!

The tram stop Monacocabbie mentioned is called opera/veille ville. There is a walk -15mns or so to the lift and steps at rue des ponchettes /Place du 8mai.

Other ways up - montee du chateau , montee rondelly, montee monfort

The council workers open the parks around 8 though not necessarily on the dot - its really going to be a time squeeze if you need to pick up luggage from a hotel etc which is why I suggested mont boron instead

The tram starts at about 4.30am

here are a couple of photos taken from Mont boron -the green above the port is Colline du Chateau

I googled for the Nice tramway map and I%26#39;m still unable to find the Opera tram stop monacoCabbie mentioned

http://www.beyond.fr/map/nicetram-map.html

As for the other ways up you suggested, selkieNice, how would I be able to get to montee du chateau, montee rondelly, or montee monfort from the train station?

Thanks again!

That%26#39;s because that site has a map that does not correspond to the actual stations - i think this was the map of the proposed tramway before it was even started

This is the correct map

http://www.lignedazur.com/ftp/FR_plan/Nice%20Tram%20(08)%2037%20(2).pdf

I%26#39;ve just sent them an email with the correct map

To find the best place to go up the chateau look at this map - zoom in on the chateau and you will see the various ways up - though the lift and stairway from place du 8mai 1945 isn%26#39;t well marked . Its just at the bottom of Tour Belande [a terracotta coloured circle on the map]
