Restaurants & Bars in Villefranche

Goin to Villefranche next week and would like some recommendations on restaurants and bars in the area. Are their any bars or are they all cafes??

There is a complete range of bars, brasseries and restaurants, with the main choice being whether you want to eat %26quot;alfresco%26quot; on the waterfront, the port, or within the town itself. Everyone has their own favourites, and prices range from mid to fairly stiff - nowhere is %26quot;cheap%26quot;according to my wallet. My own favourite is Le Cosmo at the foot of the Welcome hotel, or Les Palmiers next door. The Monaco crowd seem to favour Carluccio along the harbourfront, according to the odd Rolls Royce.

A Nice location is around Port D%26#39;Ars_e, the Baleine Joyeuse - though I thought the food pretty ordinary.

Be aware that they haven%26#39;t (at this Monday)yet finished the %26quot;plumbing%26quot; reconstruction works behind the beach - still a bit of a building site.

Villefranche tends to have the up market kind of restaurant. For a touch of local ambience you could have a cognac or two and a good lung full of smoke over breakfast in the Cafe de la Paix. Wander around and you will have no trouble finding bars.

Agreed there are plenty in Villefranche - the area nearest the car park and up the hill by the fountain - open but not seafronnt(where Cosmos is) has a few bars and even and internet bar. The hotel Welcome has a very nice bar on its ground floor facing the water - great wines by the glass, a very good selection of booze, and a very knowledgeable bar tender.

Oh, and the restaurant right on the rue Obscure(covered street just off the seafront)- called restaurant %26quot;Obscure,%26quot; I belive has excellent food and not real expensive.

In general - the prices in the village vs by the water are much less expensive.

Chez Betty up on the main road is a great bar, frequented by friendly locals and the students of the nearby French language school
