Obama at Omaha

It was finally confirmed yesterday that Obama will be in Normandy on the 6th.

No doubt there will be a ceremony in the cemetery.

That will make the day even a bit more special.

Getting around on the day will be more difficult with the increased security.

Darn it - we were just there!!! It would of been fabulous to be at the American Cemetery the same time.

Personally, I will be trying to avoid any event where there are heads of state attending. At the 60th commemorations it was impossible to move anywhere in the vicinity of the towns being visited by them, according to those who tried to attend on that occasion.

Full list of events and times here (details of Obabma%26#39;s visit not yet confirmed).

Thanks for the site - my husband is quite pleased with all that information. Merci!

The American Cemetary is going to be closed to the public on D-Day due to the dignitaries.

It is now necessary to have a Pass to get to the cemetery on the 6th, which are only obtainable from the US embassy if you are on someone%26#39;s guestlist.

One of our guests will be getting a Pass (only because he is a veteran and contacted his local senator) but he is only allowed to take one of his two travelling partners with him. It%26#39;s all rather spoilt it for the people who should be the centre of it all on the day - the guys who fought there! They are now being pushed to the sidelines to allow the politicians their photo opportunities!!!!

Glad I wont be there.

I got passes! Dad and I are going.

Has anyone noticed that the Queen of England has not been invited to the 65th anniversary D Day celebration?

British travelers have been huge supporters of this forum, not to mention why we all think this site is important.

Anyone who has visited the D Day site know why the experience is important to the French and their English and American travelers.

Oh don%26#39;t get me started! I%26#39;ve mentioned it somewhere else. Our Queen was actually in one of the services during the war. Sarkozy says that he has only invited Obama because it%26#39;s a %26quot;Franco-American event%26quot;. Someone needs to give him a history lesson and ask why, in that case, over 17,000 British and 5,000 Canadian troops gave their lives in the Battle Normandy.

I was in the cemetery yesterday. They%26#39;ve drained the mirror pond and covered it with a floor. A higher podium is being erected on it. I suppose that%26#39;s for the speech.

An MP with a dog was going round sniffing the scaffold poles and floor boards. (the dog, that is)
