Cottage/ apartment for 4.. itinerary advice

We are 2 couples in our early 60s travelling next June to Loire Valley. We want to base ourselves somewhere for a week and explore the region. Can anyone advise an apartment or cottage in a village with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

We are then going to La Rochelle for 4 days,San Sebastian 4 days and then to Marcellian for a week.

Any suggestions re our itinerary would be appreciated too. We spent a week last year in both Monpazier.Dordogne region and Uzes border of Provence. We had 2 great cottages and can thoroughly recommend Frenchcottages owned by 2 Aust guys.

Hi Lyndy

I can%26#39;t help with accommodation in Loire Valley, but recommend that you visit l%26#39;Abbaye de Fontevraud, about 15km SW of Saumur. It is a magnificent restored 12th century abbey.

In San Sebastian check out Friendly Rentals for accommodation. We used then in 2007 and although we rented a 1 bedroom apartment, they do have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments around the city. We were very happy with the service we received and the quality of the apartment. They do rentals of 3-4 days.

Have made a note of the name of the abbey

If you%26#39;re not interested in being in the thick of things, have a look at Chezania (http://franceholidaycottage.com/index.html) which is just down the road from us. Its about an Hour to Chenonceaux, 30 minutes to Loches. Failing that, check out Gite de France for more options

Its quite untouristy down this way - in a good sense. Plenty of chateaux no tour company has heard of (but open for visitors), lots of local produce: cheese, wine, honey, good restaurants, and resonable prices.

We had a very comfortable two bedroom flat with a lovely internal terrace in Chinon. Only one bathroom though, and I think a separate toilet. It was in a really good position only about two blocks from the square and the owner was really sweet. Inexpensive, clean, comfortable.

Will look it up but we prefer 2 bathrooms.

My wife and I recently stayed at Hotel la Roseraie in Chenonceaux. Although we only needed a double bed they do have a family suite. I am not sure if they have 2 baths but you could check with them. Their website is:

This was our favorite place to stay during our recent visit to France. Friendly owners and a nice location. They also have restaurant which was the best food we had and at reasonable prices.
