We%26#39;ll be there for 3 weeks inAugust. It sounds like for the local sights we are best to use train or bus.But what to see within maybe 2 hours%26#39;s drive...any way to avoid HORRIBLE TRAFFIC? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Between the buses, boats and train, you can get to just about anywhere from St Raphael without the hassle of driving in traffic. Ferry boats are not cheap (e.g. 23€ round-trip St Raph to St Trop) but in August, you%26#39;ll be glad you avoided traffic.
What I highly recommend that%26#39;s within 2-hours:
* The islands of Hyères, Port-Cros and Porquerolles. You can get to Port-Cros from St Raph by boat. It takes about 2hrs 30mins.
* The islands of Ste Marguerite and St Honorat, in front of Cannes. You can either take the train to Cannes (30mins) and hop of the boat (15mins to island) or take the boat all the way from St Raphael (1hr 10mins).
* I have to recommend the Estérel Mountains, close to St Raph and Agay. Few people know about them, but you can%26#39;t beat the views they offer. You will need a car to reach them in about 30mins from St Raph. In August, get there early in the AM to avoid heat. Not much of a traffic problem there, as most people head for the beach.
* St Tropez is worth a visit, by all means by boat. Traffic = parking jam in August. Boat leaves 9:30AM from Gare-Maritime, in front of Casino and Tourism Office. Ferry boat web site: http://tmr-saintraphael.com
* Nice, Antibes, Valbonne, Villefranche-sur-Mer, all roughly 1 hr train from St Raph.
Also inland, the Provence Verte makes for a nice break away from beaches: Abbaye Le Thoronet, Cotignac, Tourtour are all treats.
Enjoy!
