Caen logistics (ferry to Caen, train from Caen to Paris)

We%26#39;re taking our first trip to Europe next month and I%26#39;m trying to arrange some logistics. On July 21, we will most likely be taking an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, arriving at 6:30 a.m. on July 22. When our ferry arrives, the first thing we%26#39;ll want to do is go get our rental car, which we will pick up at the Caen rail station. I understand that the ferry to Caen does not actually go into Caen. So, I was wondering if there is a bus or some other way to get into town. Are there taxis available (and, if so, how much would one cost, approximately)?

We%26#39;ll be staying in Bayeux. On July 24 in the morning, we will take a train from Caen to Paris and return the car in Caen. How early should we arrive for our train? Are reservations necessary?

Thanks so much for any help.

There is a bus service to the station from the ferry port which leaves shortly after the foot passengers have disembarked.

I would say that 20 minutes before departure is ample time at Caen. Check the SNCF site to see if any cheap %26quot;Prem%26quot; fares are still available however note the restictions.

A bus goes from the ferry terminal to Caen Station arriving at the terminal about half an hour after the ferry arrives. You may be able to buy tickets at the small Tourist Office inside the Terminal or, if not, on the bus. If the car hire office is not open yet at the time you arrive there are plenty of cafes there for a coffee.

You do not actually need reservations of the train between aen and Paris, but it might be adviseable. You could make the booking at Caen before you pick up your car.
