We are making Nice our base for ten days and have rented a condo. I see it is a 3-4 hour train trip to Aix or Avignon. Do you experts think it is worth leaving early in the morning and returning late at night or alternatively leaving our condo empty and paying to stay a night in Province. Has anyone done this return route in a day? Thanks.

The rail lines across the southern portion of France have not really been updated to permit service of TGVs at their normal top speeds, hence the long travel times.
I spend a great deal of time in Provence but you would need to present a rather compelling argument to justify 6-8 hours in a train just for a glimpse of either Aix-en-Provence or Avignon.
It makes more sense to me to include these locations as a stop over en route to a return to Paris rather than as a day trip from Nice.

There is plenty to see in and around Nice to keep you occupied for ten days but Avignon might be worth the trip, especially as you get a view of much of the coast on the way. I would certainly stay overnight.

In early spring 2008, we did what Sarastro suggested, working our way from Nice to Paris via Avignon and the towns of Provence. We used public transit (bus and trains) exploring from Monaco to Antibes. We then picked up a rental car and used the toll road from Nice to Aix and back roads into the hill town of Provence, probably a few hours of driving. We loved Avignon and the hill towns such as Gordes. We were able to drop the rental car at the Avignon train station without a drop-off charge, but I assume that would not be an issue if you are returning to Nice. I agree with the other contributors, the trip to Provence should not be done as a day trip. One night would be ok, but I would try to get in more than one night in Provence.

A small point which has been made more than once before. Nice is in Provence.
