I think that%26#39;s rather a long time to spend in St-Paul, especially as there aren%26#39;t all that many restaurants from which to choose on a daily basis.

However...you can walk from St-Paul up to the Fondation Maeght, combining your interest in art and walking. If you have a car, you could drive up to Vence and see the Matisse Chapel--but call in advance, as it%26#39;s often closed for religious holidays that aren%26#39;t listed in guide books. The old town of Vence makes for good browsing and eating.

Not far from Vence is the mountain village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, set in beautiful walking country. There are a number of good restaurants and artisinal shops, as well as one of the Florian confectionary factories to tour and taste. The company specializes in the crystalized fruits for which the region is famous.

There is a Fernand Leger museum in Biot (as well as glass blowers)

The big Picasso museum is in Antibes (closed on Tuesday), but in the pottery town of Vallauris is a ceramic museum including some of the artist%26#39;s work. Just next door is the huge War and Peace mural.

The lovely perched village of Mougins has any number of art galleries and good restaurants. Our favorite place to eat there is Le Feu Follet.

Things may have changed, but when we stayed in St Paul de Vence in July 2004, the entire town closed around 5 pm. The only restaurant we could find within the walls was in an expensive hotel. Outside the walls we found a little restaurant, where we sat on a terrace by the road watching the sun go down as we ate.

It struck us strongly that St Paul was set up for day trippers rather than overnight stays.

Personally I would prefer to stay in Vence rather than st paul- less touristy, loads of excellent local restaurants, lovely mediaeval section, a real living town where St paul is predominantly art galleries and tourist shops.

St Paul does seem to quiet down early though i would have said about 8pm rather than 5 .

The section of road between st paul de vence and vence freaks me out -there is no pavement and nowhere to go but over a very low barrier to a considerable drop or into a rock face on the other side -i hate to see people walking there as i am terrified a car or bus driving too fast round the bends will plough into a group of walkers .

Not something to do at night or in poor visibility

There are good walking routes in the area -esp round st Jeannet -here are some examples

click on pays-vencois then the individual walks

Thanks for your advices - we will have a car , so may visit a few towns - all the kids will be post exam so are looking forward to relaxing by the pool - and hopefully enjoying the novelty of the sun - the weather in ireland has been awful for 3 years !!

What happened to the paved road between St-Paul and Vence? The last time we were there the road was fine, and certainly it was paved. Is there a different route other than the main one?

The road is paved but there is no pavement to walk on
