only a couple hours in Lourdes

This August we will be driving from Villefranche de Rouergue to San Sebastian, Spain on a Saturday, which appears will take about 5 hrs. We%26#39;d like to detour to Lourdes on our way, which looks like it would only add about 30 km to the trip. We would only be able to stop for 2-3 hours, including a meal. Any suggestions as to what to fit in? Or is this too ambitious to even try?

If you only have a couple of hours then I would suggest that you head for the Grotto. Spend any spare time in the Sanctuaries but I would suggest that a visit to the baths would be out of the question in August.

Options available in the Sanctauries depending of your personal preferences are:

The tent of Adoration

The Reconciliation Chapel

One of the stations of the cross (up the hill or on the prairie past the Adoration Tent)

Visit the various Basilcas (there are 3)

Or just sit at the grotto (or on the prairie on the other side of the river which is often quieter.

There are plenty of cafes near the Sanctuaries where you can eat. Possibly not the best prices or selection but if you are pressed for time ...

I hope your visit will give you some idea of the place and fill you with a desire to return for a longer trip.

If you%26#39;re still there around 5.30 - 6.00pm, make your way down to the underground Basilica of St. Pius X which is within the domain, for the Blessing of the sick. Always a very beautiful and moving occasion.

Thank you RosLondon and Hospitalier for the great info. We%26#39;ll be sure to stop and try to stay to 6pm or so for the Blessing.
