I am looking into the Institut d%26#39;Etudes Françaises pour Etudiants Etrangers at 23 rue Gaston de saporta. I am currently planning a 4 week course beginning 5 June. Any information on the school itself, rentals in Aix, or child care for my 10 year old would be greatly appreciated!

I studied there in 1985, so any advice I might have to offer should be taken as such. When I went, I landed there in January a week or so before the semester began. I was able to find a beautiful studio with a loft in a bastide called L%26#39;Espagnette owned by the Poidatz family at that time (not sure if they are still there, but I%26#39;m fairly sure the house is). They rented several rooms in one wing of the house and those tenants (all students) shared a communal kitchen and eating room. My studio I shared with one tenant and we had our own kitchen and patio area. The family was extremely helpful and warm and helped guide me when I purchased a bicycle, got sick, etc. In short, my situation wasn%26#39;t unique for the area. There are many apartment and room rentals for students during the year--however, if you are doing a summer program, you%26#39;ll be competing with vacationers, so move quickly. Perhaps you can find places through the town tourism website (wasn%26#39;t available when I was there) at http://www.aixenprovencetourism.com/uk/ . Also, many of my classmates got recommendations from the school office. I think property owners probably provide them with info when they have openings.
I found your note, because I am going back to Aix to visit this summer (a stop on a cruise) for the first time in 21 years! It was a great place to study and live. Enjoy!

I studied there in 2002-2003! I really enjoyed it!!! The school is not as high tech as an American university but I got a lot out of my classes. I don%26#39;t know what level your French but we were able to tailor our scheldules to our level. Niveau 1-4. Level 1 was all language instruction (many European students and Americans). As the levels get higher the fewer language instruction courses and more electives. They vary from Provencal History to Foreign Policy of France. The electives were taught all in French as well. The school has a small free computer lab that you would have to wait sometimes a 1/2 hour or more to use. I bought a monthly card from a cyber cafe.
I was assigned my apartment with the company I traveled with. I visited many of my friends%26#39; apartments and can tell you there is plenty of little cute furnished apartments in Aix. I had several friends that wanted to save money and lived outside the city and took the bus. I personally wouldn%26#39;t want to do this because I really liked walking through the city, being near all the resturaunts and bars. At night there are not a lot of buses that run in and out of the city. Many people I know came to the city and stayed in a hotel for a week and then looked at apartments. They have lisiting in the local papers and the school would help you as well.
I sadly do not have any suggestions for child care. I know that they have an American newspaper of some variety that advertises English speaking babysitters. I actually babysat an Australian couple%26#39;s baby during my stay. If you are comfortable you could probably find one of the gazillion American/English students there to babysit. Maybe post a flyer at the school!
Have a wonderful time!!! Bon voyage!

I%26#39;ve actually already gone and returned. I really appreciate the info though! I did love Aix, but wasn%26#39;t crazy about the school. The instructors were excellent, but the management left a lot to be desired.
I loved walking the city also. It%26#39;s the perfect size so everything is easily accessible on foot. I%26#39;m hoping to get back in a year or so, but will probably go a different route for the actual French instruction next time.
Thanks again.
