driving from Paris to Avignon via Burgundy in July

We are taking 5 days to drive from Paris to Avignon in mid-July. It has been suggested we go through Burgundy. Any reccomendations for small towns/inns to stay at along the way? We are thinking we will stay overnight about 3 times between the Paris and Avignon. We would like to stay somewhere small and reflective of the countryside.

Thanks!

Your first stop could be around Auxerre (quite large), Chablis or Vezelay (both rather small), all 2 hours from Paris on the A6. Last July, we stayed overnight in Hotel du Vieux Moulin in Chablis. It is very pleasant, with a fine dining restaurant, although we found the bedroom walls a little thin. I suggest you look at Auberge du Paradis in Saint-Amour-Bellevue, about 10 mins off the A6 just SW of Macon for your second night. It is a beautiful auberge, fabulous restaurant, in a lovely little wine village 2 and a half hours from Chablis.

Perhaps someone can recommend somewhere near Privas for the 3rd night.

Sorry, I forgot to provide links.

The web site is in French but you do get to select your room and the rates are better than those currently posted on Expedia. The restaurant is closed Mon and Tues and is open on Sun night for guests only.

Thanks so much for your help! Appreciate it!

I suggest NITRY for your fisrt stop.

From the A6 higway, take the exit after AUXERRE (n°21 i think), and visit CHABLIS and its wine if you have time , or take the next exit to NITRY where you can find hotel and restaurant.

Make sure you visit NOYERS (just 5 or 6 miles by the road), a quite small and beautifull medieval village .

I recommand %26quot;Le pot d%26#39;etain%26quot; (89440 L%26#39;Isle sur Serein ,11 km de Noyers) for the night an especially for its restaurant and the %26quot;carte des vins%26quot; (try a red burgondy wine like Moret-saint-Denis premier cru %26#39;Les Genavrières%26#39; , about 50€ but it worth it)

Our favorite stop between Burgundy and Provence is at the hotel/restaurant Les Hospitaliers in the perched village of Le Poët-Laval, near Dieulefit. It%26#39;s about 15 minutes toward the mountains from the Autoroute du Soleil and is a peaceful oasis. There are lavender fields in the area, which is also known for its yellow pottery.
