Music/Jazz clubs with kids??

Is it %26quot;done%26quot; or even legal in Paris to take a young (11) but well-behaved child early in the evening to any of the fun jazz clubs? We%26#39;ll be staying near the Caveau de Huchette, for example, and I think my son (he%26#39;s a musician too) would love to hear the music, see the dancing, etc. Will they not let him in, or we all be personas non grata among the other patrons? Or will someone call the the Parisian version of child and family services on us!

I should add that he%26#39;s been with us to clubs here in NYC....

I went there with my daughter when she had just turned 14, and there was no problem. I can%26#39;t remember the details, but it was clear to me that we were to remain in the upstairs part of the club and not go down to the cellar--but that area wasn%26#39;t even being used in the earlier evening. I think that%26#39;s a late-night atmosphere. One of the waitresses, though, invited her to go downstairs and take pictures, which we did. So we saw the Medieval artifacts on the wall, etc. After that, we just sat at the bar and she had a Pelligrino. We listened to a little music in that main upstairs area, and then left. They were very accommodating, and I appreciated it but was very conscious not to over-step.

One cool place that we did listen to jazz even with our 10 year old was in Cafe Jade on Rue Buci in the 6th. We sat at a table outside, so there wasn%26#39;t a feeling of %26quot;should we be IN here,%26quot; and the people- watching and music were great. There were also some street performers (pantomine) right in the street in front of our table, so that was perfect entertainment.

If you are staying in a hotel near Caveau, maybe you could ask someone at the desk to call and inquire for you about the appropriateness of bringing your son that evening--or maybe they could suggest an outdoor music venue, etc. And if you speak French yourself, which I unfortunately don%26#39;t, you can obviously ask a waitress or bartender if it would be OK to bring your son in with you.

There are other place you might try.

Le Houdon (corner Houdon/Abbesses in Montmartre) and Hippocampus (81 blvd Raspail) are two restaurants (very casual with good food, low prices, no cover charge) that have live jazz performers several nights a week. On our last visit to Le Houdon, there were two families with kids. There are posters in the windows of upcoming performances. At Hippocampus, you can drop by for the current schedule.

Though %26quot;touristy%26quot;, Place du Tertre is an excellent place to wander (follow your ears) for live music. We%26#39;ve seen jazz guitars, combos with brass instruments, pianists, and of course vocalists with the traditinal chansons.

Caveau de la Huchette is more a bar/jazz club, so I would definitely inquire about bringing a child. You might also want to try Les Trois Maillets (around the corner at 56 Rue Galande) which is also a restaurant, so perhaps more appropriate - there are posters in the windows of groups currently performing. It%26#39;s best to make a reservation (you don%26#39;t have to have dinner), so you could inquire at that time about bringing an 11-year old.

But, the %26quot;fun jazz clubs%26quot; are really adult-only venues - bars with live music. And, the music usually starts very late.

Thanks all!

Late on a Saturday night at the Swan bar, we shared a table with a young French couple and their well behaved two year old. I would think that you would be able to take your son to any Jazz club, especially since the smoking ban, without encountering any problems. http://www.swanbar.fr/
