Exchange rate......aaaaaahhhhhhhh

Heading to Europe for 3 weeks in September for my honeymoon, starting the trip in Paris.

What the heck is going on with the exchange rate on US dollars!! It was $1.24 2 months ago, todays it%26#39;s $1.42

Do a forum search on the thread %26quot;Wow! It only costs $1.3325 to Buy a Euro Now%26quot;

Try $1.56 for CDN dollar

And about 10 - 12 months ago it was $1.60.

The Dollar strengthened during the financial crisis because everyone was going on fear alone -- hold Dollars and buy US Treasuries. People have lost their fear of utter financial collapse, and underlying pressures on the Dollar are coming back to the forefront, so the Dollar is weakening again.

Hi -

As was pointed out, the US dollar has fluctuated rather dramatically over the last several months. There is no point in sweating it because A - you have no control over it, and B - you have no idea what it will be in September. There is a pretty good chance, as a matter of fact, that it will be significantly lower then, because European tourists probably will take advantage of their favourable rate and buy lots of dollars over the summer. Many Europeans will bring their families to DisneyWorld, and singles as well as young married couples just Heart NY and San Francisco.

There are always folks who ask if they should buy euros now in case the dollar continues to fall, but if you do that, you%26#39;ll be part of the problem, creating an even stronger market for euros against the dollar, and when the dollar strengthens, you%26#39;ll be stuck with a bunch of euros for which you will claim you, gasp!!!, overpaid.

I think my posting was a tad ambiguous - sorry had to answer the phone in the middle, and lost my train of thought.

%26quot;it will be significantly lower then%26quot; refers to the price of euros in US dollars - IOW, the rate of exchange.

I generally do a serious copy editing job on my postings, and although I may miss a spelling error (dyslexia - so not good at that), I generally catch the ambiguities like the above. My apologies to all/BCT

try converting an australian dollar, you might not feel so bad.

unlike other posters, i think its fine if you swear about it though...i do..lol

We are cheering this end of the world. The Euro is getting cheaper after being at almost 1 euro for 2 dollars.

Do you really think that tourism is what drives the international currency market? It is not.

As travelers it is out of our control. And there is nothing one can do about it. Although, after decades of a dollar dominant world, I am thrilled the Europe finally gets her chance.
